View Full Version : Win XP to Win XP?

I have win xp pro on my laptop and on my desktop, I want to transfer files
back and forth. I connected a crossover cable and tried all sorts of stuff.
The laptop nic, in propeties, I set IP address 192.168.1.2, desktop
192.168.1.1. Ipconfig /all on laptop shows ip address as 0.0.0.0. I cannot
share, transfer, nothing, what am I doing wrong? I ran through the home
network wizard on both, can I undo that/

Why those IP addresses? Just set the IP addresses to automatic. If there is
no DHCP server on the LAN, the systems will default to APIPA which works
perfectly fine for LAN file sharing. As well there's the issue of the subnet
mask, but by going automatic, that's handle automatically. From the sound of
it though you may have a dead NIC on the laptop or a bad cable. Check to see
if the indicator lights are on.
Networking wizard handles basic functionality for setting up a network.
There's nothing to "undo".

Thanks for the response Walter, I will check all you mentioned when I get

Hi,
The lights are on, bright green, I can [ing the laptop nic via loopback
127.0.0.1. Still, ipconfig /all shoes 0.0.0.0. Any more ideas? I'm
exhausted.
Thanks

Doing a ping to 127.0.0.1 doesn't hit the NIC. All that hits is the internal
TCP stack.
Are you seeing a flashing yellow light while attempting to ping the other
machine?
Also, in hind sight, do you have any firewall installed or have you
activated the XP firewall? Things are still pointing to either the NIC or
possibly the cable. And along those lines are you sure it's a cross over
cable? If you disconnect the cable does ipconfig show media disconnected or
does it still show 0.0.0.0?

Hello walter
It is definitely a crossover, I checked the ends. Also, when disconnected
ipconfig reads media state media disconnected. Green light only. No
firewall, xp firewall not on either. Repair fails, proerties say connected
100mps duration 25 minutes. It's an internal intel nic on my dell ispiron
8100 (out of warranty. But I have used it to connect to a server I have here
(swappable HDrives) I'll keep digging. I searched for updated drivers, no
go.
Thanks

Don't worry about a different set of drivers. Odds are that isn't the issue,
especially if things have worked in the past. Reinstalling the drivers may
work if there's something weird in the driver stack. What's bothersome is
the lack of a data xfer indicator. Are you saying that you can currently get
the laptop to behave when connected to a different machine image?

Well,
I have a removable drive bay in my Desktop. One is my regular HD (Win XP
Pro), the other is W2000server, I am learning,(I guess not real good). I
have no problem setting up a small w2000 server setup, That's what I do at
work (half my job, anyway) we had a Novell network 4.11, I setup nwlink,
Gateway, etc, pulled info off the novell and then shut it down, and set up
the 10 clients we have 5 win xp pro, 5 w98se) on the new dell 16000Sc w2k
server, then set up MSMAil (yes, I know, but the place wouldn't budge $$)
All works great. That is why this bothers me so much, such a simple thing.
Oh, Sorry, to answer your question, I used to use the laptop as a second
server to learn with the server HD on my desktop.Communication was Great.
All was fine. I will try to set the LT up with the server and see what
happens. Thanks so much for all your input. Don't stop! I will email here
when I get it done.

At present, if the laptop can communicate with a different OS image, I'm
leaning towards a service issue on the "other" machine.
Hmmm. Hotswap cages and the associated drives are expensive but viable. And
one of the options I do recommend for multiple OS images. ;-)
Try http://www.bootitng.com - I can currently fire up test and production
images of everything from 98 to Win2K AS (all of which are installed). I
only use the latter for testing purposes. I principally run XP.
Regardless. The key issue is whether or not the laptop can communicate with
a different OS image. Anywhere. If so, then the problem moves from the
laptop to the "other" OS image.
