Have you checked the "other" end of the connection?

Does the computer/modem you are calling work ok?

Have you tried connecting to an independent/different place to rule out
that maybe your PC is ok?

If you are dialing an ISP, have you checked (with another
computer..,e.g. the computer you used to post this newswgroup question)
their FAQ Troubleshooting web page, or phoned their customer support?

How did you check this? If your dialup does not work, then how did you
do this? Dial up with another computer? If yes, then how does your
computer setup differ?

No, it's not working ok (apparently) as dialup doesn't work.

Is your modem a windows-only modem, or an external modem? If the
former, have you tried to get updated drivers?

from the web site of the computer manufacturer, or (if you can determine
it) from the modem vendor's web site.
