Windows XP Pro Shutdown

When I go to start > Turn Off Computer, The o/s does it
thing and the screen says windows is shutting down. It
seems to lock up on the screen, I just sits there and
does nothing. I have had to just turn off the computer.
This has happened several times.

I have a pentium 4, 2.4 GHz with 1 GB memory
I have been updating windows regularly with the auto
update feature and have installed service pack 1.

Greg my computer takes about 1 minute and 30 seconds to turn off
AFTER the turnoff statement. My computer just takes a long time
to close the open programs.
