View Full Version : Allowing limited users to install

I'm setting up a machine for a friend - clean install of XP Pro. There'll be
the admin account plug two limited users. I'd like both limited users to be
able to install software without having to log into the admin account. Will
this be the default, or do I need to take steps to make it happen?

It will likely not work...at least not for most software. Limited user means
just that -

When I set up computers for friends/families with multiple logins, I show
them how to go in as an admin (using another account I set up - *not* the
default admin account, which is used as a back door only) when they need to
install software. Installing new stuff is a fairly rare occurrence, and
running under limited user permissions on a daily basis is a Very Good Idea.

Isn't the "spare" admin account identical to the default, in terms of
privileges, assuming you don't tweak it?

Yes, but it means nobody's messing with the default admin account
properties - changing passwords, screwing up the profile, etc. Like I said,
it's a back door. :)
