View Full Version : New type of pop-up after Windows update

Yesterday I did Windows update on critical, driver, and
recommended updates. I had been very negligent in doing
so. Now I receive 12-15 new pop-ups that are on my
screen every time I use it. I am on cable internet
connection. These show up on my desktop and a button
appears on my task bar. They are entitled "Messenger
Service" and ...(one just popped up)... are ads, but they
are not hot to directly default to their web page. Is
there a way I can stop them short of purchasing one of
the very programs they are trying to hawk. Also, are
they legal? It takes me several minutes to click out of
them before I can even check my e-mail. Thanks for
helping.

Click on Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services.
Find Messenger. Right click, then Properties. Next to Startup type, set it
as either Disabled or Manual.

Lance;
This is a bad fix...Unless the goal is to stop ONLY Messenger Service.
This fix does nothing for the real problem, an unprotected computer.
See my other post.

Ron;
These ads are using Messenger Service.
Messenger Service is a valuable tool many use.
Like many tools, it can be exploited.
No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.
Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/npf/
Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts
