disk cleanup & windows XP updates

Removed McAfee Firewall and am now using the default
firewall that can be switched on with XP. The McAfee
seemed to slow everything down.

Have been trying to run disk cleanup. It will not run at
all. Displays for an hour and then just disappears.

Have also tried to install the latest security updates
and the system rejects the install.

Help. I am brand new to Windows XP Home Edition.

Line 48, Right column "Disk Cleanup - Compress..."
Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
