While defragging my external HDwith Norton, it crashed and won't boot up as
an external drive. Any attempt to access the drive results in an option to
reformat it.

Any ideas? I am surprised it happened while using a quality program like
Norton.

What does this have to to with Windows XP?

Becasue he's probably using Windows XP on his system that this drive is
attached to and he figured some nice people in the group may be able to
offer him some help with his problem. Why else do you think he posted it
here???

Anywho... There are many quality products out there that you can use to
recover your hard drive. Restorer2000 Professional 2.0 is fairly cheap. I
have used the original version before and it worked great.

Do a google on 'Data Recovery software'. I'm sure you'll be able to find
some free utilities out there if you're not willing to fork over $50 for
Restorer2000.

One thing to keep in mind... unplug the external drive and don't do
anything with it until you have the software installed on your system and
ready to run. This will help ensure that you're able to recover more of
your data. I've recovered an entire drive after it was accidentally
formatted and I didn't have a single corrupt file (that I'm aware of
anyway).
