PC freezes with screen capture software

[DavidNCs]

I have a new Compaq Presario desktop PC with 2x Pentium (R) D 2.80 GHz
processors and a NVIDA GeForce 6200SE Turbocache video card. I run Windows XP
Home (with all updates).

I have need to capture parts of active windows and save them as graphics
files. To do this I have tried two freeware screen capture programmes. In
both cases I have then found that the screen will lock up (seemingly at
random and not when the software is running). The software is not 'running'
in the system tray either. Using the same software never gave me a problem on
my old PC (single processor and simple video card).

Can anyone explain this problem?

Even better can they suggest a solution (other than Alt-Print Scrn and
pasting into Paint), or suggest some software that they use with a similar
PC setup?

If you're going to be doing a lot of this sort of thing, take a look at
Paintshop Pro. I've been using it for years and I'm very happy with it. It's
probably more than you need, but it *will* handle the capture jobs with
ease.

BUT: Before spending any money, I'd first go to the Compaq site and see if
you can download newer drivers for your video card. Even though the
machine's new, there are still better drivers available sometimes.

AND: If you can use full screen captures, don't forget that you don't need
software for that. Shift-PrintScreen will put an image of the screen on the
clipboard, and it can be pasted into Word or other apps.

See if there is a setting/option in NVIDIA's software for your card.

Thanks Joe. I have updated the drivers so maybe I will need to look at
PaintshopPro.

You did not name the programs that you are using.
I do not have your type of setup.
I use the following program.
ScreenHunter 4.0 (free). Can buy the following: ScreenHunter 4.0 plus
ScreenHunter 4.3.

Hi Beamish

The first one I used (and had done on my old PC was Screen Hunter(and it was
great). I then tried FastStone, the computer freezing with this one was less,
but it did often lock-up during powerup!

Tahnks for the name, I will give it a try. However, in light of the previous
attempts I am doubtfull of success. I suspect there is some conflict between
the software routines needed for screen capture and the video card. Oh well,
if live was easy it would not be interesting. :)

That's easy to record the pc screen with the program FastCap at
http://www.ejoystudio.com you can first try to record in full screen.
If you experience lag at your pc, you can record at 512 x 480 or 800 x
600 resolution. But since you have NVIDA GeForce 6200SE graphic card, i
am sure you can record at full screen with no lagging.
