I am currently using PCAnywhere on Win 98 to connect with
my office PC. I'm using cable internet connection. I
have been told that Windows XP Pro would do the same thing
without PCAnywhere. Is this true and where in XP do I do
this?
Thanks!

The Remote Desktop feature is only available with Windows XP Pro.

XP Pro has Remote Connection (inbound and outbound) which makes this
possible.
You didn't say say wher the Win 98 machine was (home or office or both).
If calling into an XP Pro box, you need to install the client software
for Win 98, available from Microsoft. I can't remember the URL, but if
you search their download resources for 'remote desktop' you'll find it.

I use Pc Anywhere to do such a thing as it is more robust then the remote
from XP. A couple of things though you must upgrade to at least 10.5 for it
to work and the quick user switching is disabled when installed in XP. It
will change the login screen back to the 2k classic look.

Sam,
Just finished some testing using alternatives to pcAnywhere. I used
pcAnywhere under Win98 and it worked well enough for my needs - mainly via
cable modem connections to a clients network and to other family computers.
Things change and moved to XP Pro on some of the systems which would mean
shelling out some big bucks to get Symantec's latest version (v11) on all
the systems. On a suggestion from someone here I tried both VNC and
WinShadow. Found that both work very well even in a mixed OS environment
and "appeared" to be quicker than pcAnywhere. No problems getting thru
routers on each end (configure ports for 3261 or 5900) and they worked thru
firewalls on both ends and I could configure for many-to-one connections
(multiple users connecting to one PC).
VNC (http://www.tightvnc.com/) Freeware / GNU
WinShadow V2 (http://www.omnicomtech.com/) $35/seat (free to download)
There are differences of course but the one significant difference is that
WinShadow has an integral FTP client so you can transfer files. VNC does
not have that capability. Both are fast, easy to configure, and work. I
also tried VNC on a 56K dial-up and was surprised how fast it really was.
Try both and make your own decision. I'm tired of giving Symantec my money
for half-baked goodies this time around. Although I haven't tried either
version 10.5 or 11 (works with XP), I've seen enough posts from disgruntled
users that convinced me to try something different.
