View Full Version : Floppy Drive - Not formatted message

I'm transferring files from a Win 95 machine to a XP
machine using diskettes. When I insert the diskette into
the XP machine, I get the "disk is not formatted"
message. I can see the files on the disk when I view
using the Win 95 machine.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Bill.

Format the disk on the XP machine and then re-try copying them form the 95
system.
I've had quite a few problems with floppy disks going from Windows 9x to XP.
Usually after receiving the message you got, the disk is dead, but not
always. I tend to have more luck if I format the disk on the XP machine
then copy the files from the 9x system onto it and to the XP machine.
Hope this helps...

If you have a Windows 9x boot floppy, try booting the XP machine with it.
If it won't boot off the boot floppy you have a hardware problem.
If it successfully boots from the 9x boot disk, try having your system
redetect the floppy drive. Boot to Safe Mode, start tapping F8 as the
system boots, when you see the menu, select Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode,
open Control Panel, open the System Applet, go to the Hardware tab, go to
Device Manager, remove all instances of the floppy controller, then boot
into Windows. Once finished booting, the system should have redetected the
floppy drive.
If you still have the problem, since this appears to be a new machine, you
might want to take it back to the store where you purchased it and see if
they can resolve the issue.

More than likely a head alignment problem.
