Dan:
I have the exact same problem. I thought I had
installed XP SP-1 but a check at installation history
reveals the download failed. Now, Windows Update brings up
SP-1 as a critical update but I cannot download it as I
get a generic "Update failed. Please go back to Review and
Install and try agan". Now, how did you install SP-1
without using the web? (Did you try the network version? -
Is that kosher for PCs?)

The worst thing is the critical RC security patch also
appears in Windows Update while I installed it a few days
back and I can see it in the PC Registry! I have a feeling
this has to do with the lack of SP-1 which is why I plan
on installing SP-1 first and then re-installing the patch.
