Is there a way for me to download the updates to a folder
and run them from that folder so that I don't have to
download them all everytime I reformat?

yes. In Windows Update, go to the pane on the LH Side and click on
Customise. Click on "Show Windows Update Catalog". You can then use
Windows Update to tell you what updates are available for download, but
actually download them through Windows Update Catalog. You can then save
them, or burn them to a CD for future use.

Just curious ... how often do you reformat? For most people, this a
very rare occurance.
