When clicking on any icon in start menu or on the desktop
in Windows XP SP1, Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) closes
due to error.

See if the System File Checker can help: run
SFC /scannow
from Start > Run.
If the problem has just started to appear you can alternatively try to
solve it with the System Restore tool: "How to Restore the Operating
System to a Previous State in Windows XP"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306084). If this does not help you
may have to reinstall Windows as described here: "How to Perform an
In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP"
