From all the patches, updates and whatnote, how can any
one determine which one is essential and which one is
not. I just installed XP and visited Windows Update web
page...more then 35 patches and upgrades I need to
install!
Furthermore, if I decide to install one upgrade or more
what is the installation sequence, which one comes before
the next!
Thanx

Windows Update will mark all the ones you really need as critical updates.
Install all of these.
The ones that remain under Windows are for you to choose if you want them.
Windows Update will install the selected patches in the relevant order (if
needed)

Donald,
The coherent answer is that if you use Windows Update the Critical updates
are marked for you.
The OS specific ones are optional and there are details under each one of
what it is
You can then choose to install these or not.
Most of the updates also include either a Q article reference number or more
descriptive text as to what it is for. Again this is to provide you with
additional information.
