Surely would appreciate some help to solve this vexing
problem that has XP freezing up unexpectedly, usually
when multiple apps are open:
I had to reinstall XP Pro ... then went through
downloading SP1 and most of the other recommended
updates. My system used to run great; I was able to have
multiple applications open simultaneously and I don't
think the system ever crashed or hung. Now it hangs all
the time, albeit very unpredictably, with only two or
three apps open. When this happens, I can't even bring
up the task manager. If I wait 20 or 30 minutes, the
system seems to restore itself, until it happens again,
usually right away.
My virtual memory is set to "let windows manage".
Currently showing 254MB of free memory. BTW, I'm running
512 MB of RAM; 80MB hard drive is partioned into C:, D:
and E: drives; ample room on each partition. I've done a
chkdsk /f and have defragmented the drive several times.
Also used the sfc /scannow filechecker to re-copy DLLs.
Ran MemTest overnight; no errors reported - RAM OK.
On a recent crash, the Event Viewer (applications) noted
a fault with iexplore.exe, faulting module gdi32.dll. I
also regularly see errors in the TrueVector Service:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: TrueVector Service
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5007
Date: 8/19/2003
Time: 7:35:50 PM
User: N/A
Computer: WOLFSONFAM
Description:
TrueVector engine: File "C:\WINDOWS\Internet
Logs\WOLFSONFAM.ldb" was corrupt and has been copied
to "C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\xDB30.tmp".
File "C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\WOLFSONFAM.ldb" was
corrupt and has been deleted.
I don't know what the hell all this stuff means, but
suspect it means I have big problems. I don't want to do
another complete reinstall of Windows - too many apps and
too much time.
Nothing seems to work. Could someone kindly help me sort
out this mess? TIA!
