Hi, even though I have checked the option: "Keep my computer up-to-date" it
never does go and try to update Windows with fixes, etc.
Also, I am not experiencing any difficulties with XP or anything.
Do I really need the updates, patches, etc.?

There is always the chance that MS will finally fix this
extremely buggy OS, but I wouldn't count on it. My guess
is that they have fixed the easy stuff, and are too busy
developing the next generation monstrosity to spend any
more time on this turkey.

'Extremely buggy OS' is of course is only your opinion. As a matter of fact,
and not opinion, it happens to be the most stable OS to date. It is too bad
you get over emotional when a small problem occurs. How else can one
determine why the words 'extremely buggy' is stated.

If you want to know what I mean you can ask, but instead
you choose to hide behind a mask of anonymity and wag your
finger at me.
Perhaps XP works well with Office XP, but it crashes
regularly with Office 2000. In general I have found that
earlier generations of software do not always get along
well with XP. My old Windows 98/Office 97 tandem at home
does not have the flexibility of XP/Office 2000, but it is
much more stable.
XP also has some pretty serious hardware issues. XP
drivers are too often unavailable. When it isn't having
those problems it works better than anything I have seen
from MS.
The search function in XP is frankly pathetic, but MS has
never done well with searches in any of its products.
When I need to find something on this web site I go to
Google.
XP has the elements to be a very good OS indeed, but it
was not ready when it was released. My concern is that in
another year MS will role out yet another OS, and XP will
be ignored while the inevitable bugs in the new one are
addressed. MS should recompile the core of XP, and make
it really work this time. No OS is perfect, and people
need time to develop workarounds. It is a real blow to
productivity when so much time needs to go into finding
solutions to problems that could have been avoided with a
little more user testing prior to release of the OS.
