View Full Version : Installing Windows XP On A New Machine

I've been running Windows XP Pro on this one machine, a PIII, for over a
year now. And, like everyone else, I registered this copy when I installed
it.
Now I'm considering a new machine, like a P4.
Can I install this same copy of Windows XP Pro on the new machine, and
switch the first machine back to Windows 2000?
After I install XP on the new machine, it will want to go out and register,
or at least confirm the owner of this copy.
What to do? It's not like I'm running multiple copies of Windows XP on
simultaneously on different machines.

As long as you reload the first machine with Windows 2000, and the XP
version is not an OEM version that is tied specifically to the hardware on
the first machine, then you are perfectly within the license agreement to
put XP on the new machine.

No need to register but you will have to activate XP on the new machine.
Depending on how long it has been since you activated XP on the current
machine, activation may be automatic. If not, choose to activate by phone
where, if needed, you will have the chance to talk with a rep and explain
the situation.

As I said, as long as you remove it from the first machine before
installing it on the second you are well within the retail license.

It is activation that matters - not registration. I would not register
again, but you must remove the software from the old machine and only
then install on the new and activate it there. And you may only do this
for a retail copy - one bought as an 'OEM' one with hardware, and 'for
distribution only with a new computer' may not be transferred. When it
comes to activation, you may find it will go through on the net anyway -
if more than 120 days since you last did it certainly will. If not, you
will have to phone a toll-free number that will be given, to explain and
swap one long number for another to check back as you type it in
