View Full Version : Next version of Windows Messenger

Does anyone know, what is the name (code name or version number) of the next
Windows Messenger version to be released? Note, not the MSN messenger but the
"business friendly version".
Will there be a new version maybe attached to Vista?
And also, when will the next version be available?
Thanx!

Greetings Karin,
I'm afraid Windows Messenger has ceased development a few years ago and the team no longer
exists. Some of the team migrated over to the Office Communicator client, which is the
client devoted for Live Communications Server, others are now part of the MSN Messenger team.
Vista will not contain an IM client, but Windows Messenger 5.x will install. However, just
to be clear, there will not be another version of the Windows Messenger client. Which really
is too bad.

Does this mean remote assistance will not work with Vista or will it be part
of messenger live ?

Using Live Messenger you can ask for a remote assistance and in Vista there
is also a "stand-alone" program as in XP, Remote Assistance.

They changed Remote Assistace so that it is NOT dependent on having Windows
Messenger present on the system.

Let's clear that last post up, before anyone twists it out of context.
They changed Remote Assistance in Vista so that it is NOT dependent on
having Windows
Messenger present on the system. This is in contrast to Windows XP, where
Remote Assistance is dependent on having Windows Messenger present on the
system.

Hi Paul,
Remote Assistance is busted in Windows Messenger on Vista presently, but I assume it will be
fixed as the feature is still there (and with a new UI to boot).
