View Full Version : Slow shut-down

Windows XP Professional on a Toshiba Satellite laptop:
Takes a long time to shut down under the best of
circumstances, and longer yet most of the time (best of
circumstances occurs rarely). Biggest problem comes when
computer has gone to sleep after a period of inactivity,
and I attempt to awaken it. I can hear the hard drive
writing away, and there is a delay with even the simplest
process. The computer runs very badly from then on,
forcing a restart. However, individual programs take 30
seconds or more to shut down. Clicking Start > Shut Down
leads to another delay before the Shut Down options box
appears. After that it can take over five minutes for the
computer to finally shut down, if it does so at all. I
have needed to resort to pushing the power button to shut
the thing off (due to security considerations I cannot
leave for the day with my network connection open, but I
also cannot wait ten or fifteen minutes to see if the
computer will shut down). I have run defrag, etc., but to
little effect. I apply all of the many patches and fixes
that have been released, but this is not an issue that MS
even acknowledges, if indeed it is aware of it at all
(ordinary users are never heard in Redmond).
Any thoughts?

Thanks for the information. I have bookmarked the page,
and copied into a document some of the things that are
seemingly relevant to my situation. I don't have time
just now to try them, but I certainly will.
