Hello all,

I am having trouble trying to associate a file type ( rmvb ) with a program
(RealPlayer v10) in Windows XP. I want to be able to double-click files with
an rmvb file extension and have RealPlayer open and play the video file.

Here are the steps I'm using:

1. Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types
2. New
3. In the Create New Extension property I enter the file extension of rmvb.
4. In the Opens With property I click the Change button and select RealPlayer.
5. I check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".
6. Click OK button
7. Click Close button.

Now when I double-click any file with an rmvb extension I get a popup that
say's "Windows cannot open this file.".

What do I need to do to make this work?

Why are you trying to do that manually? I just checked my associations and
Real Player was listed as the program using that file extension.

Go back and open Real Player and check Tools > Preferences > Content > Media
Types > Manually Configure ... has the bullet > Select and review the list.

Jerry,

Yea I checked my Real Player too and it's also using that file extension but
when I double-click files of that type I just get the popup saying Windows
can't open that file. Thus, I thought maybe associating it manually using
Windows would do the trick.

===============================
Sounds like Windows and not RealPlayer
is trying to open the file....

Have a look at this article:

(307859) HOW TO: Change File Associations
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307859

More info:

Try this...right click one of your .rmvb files...
from the menu, select...Open With / Choose
Program.

Make your choice from the list or Browse to the
correct program if it is not in the list.

Once you make your selection...be sure to check
the box that says: "Always use the selected program
to open this kind of file".

Also...you can right click a file and choose
Properties / Change Button...choose the program
you wish to use and click...OK / Apply / OK.
