Somebody in Beijing, China sent me several emails last week with that virus
attached. Obviosly there's lots of w*****s in China, as well as the rest
of the world :-)

The apparent sender of these messages is virtually never the actual
sender. The return addresses are forged and come from other sources.
That means, if you write a nasty email back to the guy in the 'From'
field, you'll get, at best, a confused reply. In fact, it's quite
likely you will soon get messages about stuff YOU supposedly sent
being undeliverable, and if the message describes what "you" sent,
it will probably have one of the telltale subject lines. (This
won't necessarily mean you have the virus.)

.....Arin ...or was it Ripe ...or Apnic ...I can't remember now .....listed
the IP DNS as located in Beijiing China. ....and just to clarify, I said
that somone "sent" me the virus, I did not say that I contracted the virus
:-)

Just out of curiosity, what might cause a virus author to include
an expiration feature? It seems irrationally rational.

Hi Mark,

Yes it does! :o)

"Like its predecessors, SoBig.F is unique because it has a short life
cycle -- generally two to three weeks. Weafer said there may be several
reasons why SoBig.F's author has implemented an expiration date.

For example, he or she may be testing different variants to see which one
works best, may be concerned that an earlier variant could interfere with a
newer one, or may want to avoid getting caught."

Interesting read. I did wonder about the date. I also wondered if
the Aug 11 upheaval was noteworthy enough to connect to 9/11. And
if all this actually is leading up to a big bang from Al Qaeda & Co.,
we're certainly not hearing about it from our "intelligence" folks.

Actually not only is Al Qaeda on the top of my list of likely
suspects, this is only the beginning of a war against our
infrustructure. In response to Sept 11 2001 the US government set out
on two policies. One was an pretty open effort to keep all Arab and
all Muslims possibly out of America. The other policy was to set
about a set of operations which could only **** off millions of
Mulsims, harm their economies, and create recruits.

Now you have a desire to strike America, you have shown that you can
recruit people with the technical skills to fly airplanes, you have an
already existing system of Internet sites, and there are thousands of
Muslims in South Asia who are some of the best Internet programmers in
the world and, like all IT pros, are living with grave uncertainty and
a feeling of being attacked by America.

It seems almost obvious that the ideal line of attack would be a
virus. And considering how much some firms (I won't name names)
contract almost every piece of code to India and how some of the main
development centers are in Urdu speaking higly Muslim areas, it is
likely that someone in South Asia, for a price, was able to recieve a
fuller understanding of the working of Windows OS then Linux or Mac
has been able to.

There is even a suspect, a Malay master virus writer who warned of
attacks against the US Interent infustructre for the invasion.

The problem is the US goverment of Bush thinks mid 20th Century, and
Al Qaeda thinks 7th Century but seems able to use 21st Century
technology. A stary combination when the technology outstrips the
social development by 1400 years. Like Julius Caesar getting muskets.

5 Steps to computer safety:
1) Use a good quality anti-virus, and keep it up-to-date.
2) Use a firewall. The one in XP works fine, but there are better ones out
there.
3) Keep Windows up-to-date. It's your choice whether or not you want the
recommended updates, but the critical updates are just that - critical.
4) Beware of adware and spyware. There are many programs that will help to
protect your computer, but it's up to you to prevent it as well. Make sure
you read the agreement of the software before you install it. It should
tell you if it will be installing any additional programs.
