View Full Version : Error Code 81000314

JAS
June 27th 06, 09:03 AM
I have tried to sign into Messenger unsuccessfully all morning, keep getting
the following error message: "Signing into windows live messenger failed
because the service is temporaily unavailable. Please try again later, error
code : 81000314"

Anyone else experiencing similiar problems or know if this is a wider issue?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies glad to see that I am not alone with this problem.
Yep I also checked the service status this morning and it said ok, not too
sure what is going on but I thought it was just my computer playing up. Hope
they will resolve it soon.

Greetings,

This is a server-based server and usually a localized problem within a small amount of
accounts.

Unless the entire or majority of the service is down for an extended period, the system
status page won't change.

Thank you Johnathan. After reading replies after your statement, if it works
on one machine and not another - Mohamed, are you using the same account to
login with? If so, Johnathan, your stament of being localized to a small
number of users cannot be quite correct, OR, Mohamed has a different problem
all together with the first machine they tried.

Are the user accounts stored on your servers randomly or by geographic/IP
address? I am in Northern Indiana and I too am having this same error. I am
also getting complaints from other users in my company using their personal
accounts to sign in and are unsuccessful.

And were is this status page you speak of? I tried to find Messenger's
site, but am getting redirected to the new Live site. I thought it use to be
www.msn.com/messenger....

Thanks for your time!

Hi,

I'm willing to accept that it's another problem, the error codes are based on either what the
server is returning or simply where it stops in the login process -- as such, my assumption
can easily be incorrect.

They're not random (obviously by balancing or simply by order in which user is registered,
unfortunately I'm not privy to that exact information now). I can tell you that they're not
by region however -- locale information is simply one entry in each user's account. As well,
the Messenger servers are located in Southern California.

The status page is here:
http://support.live.com/eform.aspx?productKey=wlmessenger

Hi,

Just to add, I've already heard ~6 reports of this today (which albeit doesn't sound like a
lot, but ratio wise it's noticeable) so there is an actual problem here (server-side).

I have got the same problem, MSN Messenger on my PC won't log me in, Web
Messenger does.
And I am from Belgium (Europe) so I don't think it is a local problem.

We're still getting this error today (14-40 GMT) +1 in the UK on 27/6/2006.
Didn't work on work network, although was OK before. Successfully logged in
earlier today at home on my Mac

Looked up the error on Live.com and came up with the following:
"Error 81000314, 81000377 or 81000378: Your contact list is not available
If you receive one of these messages, your contact list is not available or
is in read-only mode. Wait a few minutes, and then try to sign in again."

But I'm starting to think that the status page needs to be changed to "there
is a potential problem that we are aware of and (i hope) are trying to fix
it". Perhaps a reboot - it works well for my 2003 Servers... lol (little IT
humor in the MS world)

Thanks again!

Hi,

It's very inconsistent. I'm afraid I don't have any details of what's going on yet.

Also cannot connect to messenger from any machine in my network, here in the
UK, so hardly a localised problem!

Hi,

It may just be inconsistently working. But I -highly- doubt it's not a problem with your PC
as there is too many people who are just experiencing the problem today.

Hi Eric,

Well, it's 7:56AM Redmond time, so someone has to be awake to change it, let alone reboot :).

Joking aside, the status page really doesn't change unless the entire service is down. This
is not the only Messenger community I monitor and there aren't that many reports of this
problem elsewhere (yet anyway).

Hi,

Well, the error code is indicating an account problem (probably one of the SQL databases), so
it doesn't matter what computer, network or where on the planet you are.

Right now I can't access from MSN Messenger 7.5. I get the 81000314
message like everyone else.
I have read the thread so it does look like a server issue.

For some reason though, Web Messenger works.

Jonathan, any idea why the regular client does not work, but the web
browser client works fine?

Hi,

Well the login process is different -- just like if you use Windows Messenger (not Live) it
uses a completely different version of the protocol which might allow you to sign in.

If one allows you to sign in but another doesn't it's either inconsistent or a problem with
the process involved with signing in with a specific version of the client.

Either way, I hope to have more details within the hour.

Hi Mohamed,

Thank you for contacting Windows Live Messenger Technical Support. My name
is Jon, and I will be glad to assist you with your concern.

Based on the information I received, I understand that you could not sign in
to Windows Live Messenger and you are are receiving the error code 81000314.
You tried to test the status of Windows Live Messenger and it does not have
any problems. You even tried to reinstall Windows Live Messenger but it did
not resolve your issue. You tried to connect to other computers and you
actually could and there was no problems with it. Please accept my apology
for whatever inconvenience this caused you. Rest assured that I will do my
best to help resolve your concern.

You are experiencing this issue because your Windows Live Messenger cache
has been corrupted or your Windows Live Messenger service is temporarily
experiencing difficulties.

The following instructions are lengthy but helpful and it is important that
you follow them carefully in the order shown to ensure the problem is
resolved.

To give you a brief overview on what you will do, here is a summary of steps
you will be performing:

- Verify the status of the Windows Live Messenger service.
- Clear the Windows Live Messenger cache.
- If the issue persists, send us a connection log file.

I know how this can be quite confusing but I would appreciate your patience
in accomplishing each step.

Try the following solutions in the order that they are listed:

1. The Windows Live Messenger service may be experiencing temporary
connectivity issues. To verify the status of the Windows Live Messenger
service, visit http://messenger.msn.com/Status.aspx.

2. Try to sign in again later.

3. If the issue persists, follow these steps to clear the Windows Live
Messenger cache:
a. If Windows Live Messenger is running, right-click the Messenger icon in
the notification area at the far right of the taskbar, and then click "Exit."
b. Open a Command Prompt window:
- On Microsoft Windows 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000, click "Start,"
click "Run," type "cmd," and then click "OK."
- On Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition, click "Start," click "Run,"
type "command," and then click "OK."

c. At the command prompt, type "CD\", and then press ENTER.
d. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
CD %appdata%\microsoft
e. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
CD "MSN MESSENGER"
f. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
DEL /s ListCache.dat

Note: This command deletes all the ListCache.dat files in all subfolders.
You may see a list of the files that are being deleted.

g. At the command prompt, type "exit", and then press ENTER.
h. Restart Messenger.

4. If the issue persists, send us a connection log file.

A. Install the latest version of Windows Live Messenger:
i. Go to http://get.live.com/messenger/overview
ii. Click on the "Get it free" or “Download Now” button and step through the
wizard to install Windows Live Messenger.

B. To generate connectivity logs for Windows Live Messenger, follow these
steps:
i. Right-click the Windows Live Messenger icon in the notification area at
the far right of the taskbar, and then click "Exit."
ii. Delete the already existing connection log file.

a. Start Windows Live Messenger, but do not sign in.
b. On the Windows Live Messenger "File" menu, click "Open Received Files."
c. In the My Received Files folder, locate and select the MsnMsgr.txt file,
and then press DELETE.

iii. Make sure that Connection Logging is enabled:
a. Start Messenger, but do not sign in.
b. On the "Tools" menu, click "Options."
c. In the "Options" dialog box, click "Connection," and then click "Advanced
Settings."
d. Under "Connection Logging," make sure that the "Save a log of my server
connections to help troubleshoot connection problems" check box is selected.
e. Close the "Options" dialog box.

iv. Sign in to Windows Live Messenger again: click "Sign In." The new
connectivity log file (MSNMsgr.txt) is automatically generated in the My
Received Files folder that is described in step 4.b.ii.c.

C. To send the MsnMsgr.txt log file to Windows Live Messenger support, send
a reply back to the support incident response, and attach the log file to the
e-mail.

I hope these steps help you resolve your concern with Windows Live
Messenger. If these steps still did not resolve your issue, do not hesitate
to send a reply back to this e-mail and we would be happy to figure out and
resolve your issue further because you are a valuable customer to us.

If you need further assistance with Windows Live Messenger, you may contact
us at http://support.live.com or visit

features of Windows Live Messenger.

Thank you for contacting Windows Live Messenger and have a nice day.

Hi. It's Thursday June 29th, 5:33 pm EST and I'm still experiencing the same
problem. Only once for a few minutes did it work, then it signed off by
itself, and have not been able to sign on again. Any one else still having
this problem? Any ideas as to when this will be resolved. Thank you.

messenger/Windows Live. June 30th. Been going all day for me. Ran all
the steps, all the systems seems to be up.

Crazy.

Windows Live Messenger isn't working for me either. I tried using
webmessenger, and it won't sign me in. I've been using the same email addy
for years.

Been happening since 3:30 pm (June 30th)...it's now 10:15pm (June 30th).

What's the deal?

Hi everybody!
I've been unable to connect to the Messenger service since last night. I've
tried to connect on 5 different computers, on different networks, with
different MSN methods: MSN messenger, meebo.com, web messenger, trillian,
etc. None of them will connect. I've even tried changing my password. I keep
getting an error like "messenger service is currently unavailable error:
81000314. Please try again later "retry") I am in Ottawa Canada.

Hi,

Happy Canada Day. Unfortunately this error as stated earlier is a server-based error. As
such, there's nothing you can do about the problem except try again later.

It's been 2 days for me now, But yet my wife has no problem signing in her
account. I did a disk scan check and i couldn't quite read it but i had bad
clusters with my acount name in it. after it was done checking and fixing I
tried to sign in again, but still no. Why would it allow others on the same
pc but not mine?? I have no problem signing into my email though, just MSN.

Yup. It seems to only affect my username too. Thanks for the
explanation Microsoft guy.

Same problem experienced in Taipei. Some of my friends are not affected, but
only me. I guess this is because I registered the hotmail account in the very
early day (about 9 years ago).

Very annoying situation.

Hello,

I have been experiencing this error code for a couple of days now and still
cant log on to Live Messenger on my Laptop. However, logging on to
LiveMessenger on my home PC and @hotmail.com or using another account for
live messenger on my laptop is "ok".

Please kindly advise if there is anything I can do to solve this problem on
my laptop.

Thanks!

I have tried many things to fix this problem, i.e. making new log on accounts
from my computer. I have alos researched the error code and found nothing! My
friend and i are completely baffled we hvae spent the majority of this
morning tryin various things, the situations becomes "weirder" as my friend
can sign on and so can my brother, it just doesn't let me sign in. I have had
this problem for a couple of days now and as the service status says that all
servers on msn and windows live are running fine i cannot see how this
problam has occured, If anyone has any method of fixing this please reply as
i am desperate to fix this, it is driving me and my friend around the bend!!!!

Hi I'm from Singapore & I'm having the same problem as you guys. Tried to

Error 81000314, 81000377 or 81000378: Your contact list is not available
If you receive one of these messages, your contact list is not available or
is in read-only mode. Wait a few minutes, and then try to sign in again.

this is what the live help says about the error code... i guess that means
the problem is in the server... im gettin the same error... and its
annoying... i hope they fix it soon because everything shows that its located
in the server not in our computers...

heres the fix guys! it worked for every1 thats done it so far!

add these 2 lines to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.skadns.net

ooh, for thos of you who cant see ur hosts file, open notepad and put in
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" as the file name... make sure u dont
ad .txt to the file name wen u save it but if you do then just re-name and
delete the extension...

ive just received the same prob as u guy a few mins b4 posting this
msg. ive had a similar problem b4.....but i forgot the error code.
anyways, i did a system scan using HijackThis. it showed that i had a
lot of host addresses that uses the same address...most of which was
porn sites. i deleted the host address n logged back in msn. n it
workes fine!

i think the problems we all have might b of the same cause....the host
ip. strangely when i did a system scan this time, it didnt show weired
results like the last time.

i apologise in advance if ive put up false hopes on those who think
ive already solved the prob.

btw im from singapore

I've been trying to log on to MSN for almost 2 days now. Tried almost every
google searched solution I could find, including tampering with the host
file, dll registering, installing different versions etc. The strange thing
is, I can sign in with my old hotmail address account no problem but not my
gmail one, not even to web messenger.

I am having exactly the same problem as Kai Yau

I have not been able to log into Live Messenger and Windows Messenger since
Thursday. I get the same error message along with several others, sort of a
round robin experience. Microsoft tech support says it's a problem with the
OEM Windows Compaq installed on my laptop. Compaq says it's a problem with
Microsoft's Messengers. Chatting live with tech support is like talking to a
sack of hair. Emails to tech support are unanswered. And the beat goes
on......

Haven't been able to log into Live Messenger and Windows Messenger for 3 days
now. MS says it's a problem with the XP Compaq loaded on my laptop. Compaq
says it's a problem with the MS Messengers. Chatting with tech support is
useless. Emails to tech support remain unanswered. And the beat goes on......

It's happening here in the UK lots, I am starting to think that live
messenger has a bug or two in the system, lots of people I know are moaning
about not being able to sign in properly.

Hi, I joined this forum specifically to solve this error.
This has happened since yesterday.
I've googled this and have tried all the methods - all have NOT worked.

This is getting on my nerves. It also appears not to work on the other
computer in the house.

I'm in Singapore.

Hi all -
I am in the St. Louis area, and we are unable to log into messenger
this morning, either from home or from work. Sporadic logins available
yesterday, but not a good situation.

What is being done?

Val

I'm located in Singapore, South East Asia

This problem has happened since last night, at about 11PM in my area (+8GMT)
I tried to log in this afternoon (about 2PM). It was successful, but it
suddenly went off again

This problem is the same for the both computers in my house.

Hey to all of you:
here you have a great solution that has worked fine for me and several
others:

Go to Start > Run and type "regsvr32 softpub.dll" without the
quotes, then hit ok.
Ps. in Windows Vista there's no run, so just type "cmd" (without the
quotes) in
the start search box and hit enter :)

Good luck!

I was getting knocked off yesterday, then eventually could not log in -
got the 81000314 error message. I tried the diagnostics that poped up -
said I could not make an HTTP connection - but had to look at a log file
- forgot where it came from - sorry. This maybe coincidently started
after Microsoft pushed a bunch of security updates for XP Media Center.

I'm using Live Messenger 8.5.1302.x

I'm not sure how I fixed the problem, but here's what I did:
1) downloaded and updated new firmware for my Linksys router (I've been
meaning to do this anyhow).
2) Tried to log in again and got same error (wasn't the problem)
3) Ran the diagnostics again - which showed everything is OK, then
tried the Repair option.
4) I happened to notice Symantic's Norton Protection Center (piece of
junk) had a dialog box hidden in the background to authorize a program's
access to the internet, which I allowed - I think it was for the
Diagnistics.
5) I went into the Messenter Tools, following the Microsoft diagnostics
steps:

1. Click the Tools menu, and then click Options.
2. Under Connection, click Advanced Settings.
3. In the Settings dialog box, click Test in the HTTP section. When the
test results appear in the Connection Tester dialog box, click OK.
4. Click OK, and then click OK again.

Everything worked OK. so I went back to the Connections menu and
clicked on the Refresh button. I don't remember if there were other
steps, but I asked it to connect, and for some reason it worked.

I'm not sure what fixed the problem. I suspect the Microsoft security
updates was not interacting with Norton Protection Center properly. Just
a theory.

Good luck everyone.

Greetings,

This is a bad idea. The service was just a tad unstable today for at most 20-30 minutes. I
would recommend you remove these now.
