Remote Procedure Call service failure

I have a Toshiba laptop recently upgraded from Win98 to XP
Pro. It worked fine for a while but now frequently gives
the following:

"System Shutdown. Please save all Work In Progress and Log
Off. Windows must now restart because the RPC (Remote
Procedure Call) service has terminated unexpectedly."

The MS Knowledgebase doesn't seem to know anything about
this problem.

Any hints , tips etc. gratefully received.
