Same thing happened to me after the latest two critical
updates [Security Update for Microsoft Data Access
Components (823718) and Cumulative Patch for Internet
Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (822925)], so I did a system
restore to the day before.
My computer is back to normal now without those updates
even though my installation history says they were
successfully downloaded. I know they aren't really
installed because my auto update notifier is telling me
to download and install them.
