I am trying to download a star wars movie from limewire.com. I then try to
play them in windows media player. Most of them are avi. files and they will
not play. The only ones that seem to work are mpg's. Does anyone know of a
converter that actually works and is free? The ones that I have found never
will work.

I don't want to help you break copyright laws but I will answer simply
because it can always benefit those that are NOT trying to break copyright
and instead actually PURCHASE the movies they want to watch.

You don't need to convert them, you just need the correct codecs.
Download and install G-Spot Codec Identifier from
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and then analyze the avi files to find out
what codec you need. It's normally DIVX or XVID... www.divx.com and
www.xvidmovies.org but you may find yours are different.

Google "Purchase Download Movies" there are quite a few of them.
I haven't used any so I can't make a recommendation.
