Help!
I am unable to defrag or complete chkdsk because of a
corrupt file in c:\windows\help.
I have run scannow and sfc.exe but still cannot correct
the problem.

Hi

How have you associated defrag & chkdsk not running because of a corrupt =
file in the windows\help folder. What, if any, error message did you =
get when running sfc /scannow?

Try to delete the corrupt file from a command prompt.
Start > Run > 'cmd'
Go to c:\windows\help with command: 'cd c:\windows\help'
and issue the following command: 'del [filename...]'
( if the file name is long ie >8 or contains spaces put the file name inside
citation marks or use its short name which you may retrieve issuing command:
dir /x/p)

Hi, Chub.

HOW are you using scannow and sfc.exe?

Sfc.exe is the program; /scannow is one of several parameters that you can
use with sfc. You can't actually "run scannow". The proper usage is to
type at the Run prompt: sfc /scannow

Note the space before the "/".

Others have given you good tips. First, use Markku's suggestion to delete
the bad file. Chkdsk should then give a clean bill of health. Then use sfc
/scannow (with your WinXP CD-ROM at hand) to let it put back the "known
good" copy from the on-disk cache. Finally, run chkdsk and defrag again.
