View Full Version : Yahoo Messenger Pains

I don't know if this forum is the proper place to post my question...
BUT.... I 'm being
bugged by the Yahoo Messenger pop ups for me to upgrade to their new version
7.5, or the Beta version 8. I'm running version 6 right now, and I'm pretty
happy with it. The last time this happened, I could not turn off the pop
ups and clicking on the "no thanks" button only works till the next time you
sign on. Why can't one just use a simple version of Yahoo Messenger, and
not "HAVE TO" upgrade all the time, with no choice in the matter. I really
have no use for all the "bells and whistles" that Yahoo pushes.
What are my choices? - Trillian?
Thanks,
Dan

I am sure that there is a way to turn this off in the settings of the
messenger...
look in there carefully

Thanks for your thoughts. I tried looking in the many preferences options,
along with the many help links, and could not find anything concerning this
pop up. I even wrote a note to Yahoo. I guess when something is FREE... you
pretty much get what you pay for in customer service :-)

Daniel,
can you check in the c:\program files\yahoo messenger
folder and look of a yupdater.exe
file? this is actualy what does the checking...
try renaming that to yupdater.exe.bak
and see if this solves the problem....
I have 8 beta so I am not sure if its the same...
Post back and tell me if it works..
thanks

Thanks....... I found the file as you said in the Messenger directory of
Yahoo, and after having to turn on the "show extensions" feature in Window
preferences, I renamed yupdater.exe as you said. After 2 reboots nothing
came up from Yahoo to upgrade. So we will see what happens in a few days.
Now if only my Norton Anti-vrus would load up as scheduled, things would be
great. The stuff you want to start up does not, and the stuff you do not
want to start up does - Grrrr. Sounds like LIFE :-)
