Hi NewsGroup,
I'm just looking for your expert opinion on something.
My computer is not well. Everybody thinks its a virus
but I don't think it is.
The problem occurred on Wednesday after 6. I went onto
Windows Update to see if there were any critical
updates. It turned out that there were 2. I'm not even
sure what they were. I also got an XP update to do with
Error reporting.
I do know that none of the updates was the MS Blast
patch, because i have had that one since the middle of
July.
I was in the middle of playing CM4 at the time, tried to
save the game and it said cannot save game, so i just
closed CM4. The update required the system to restart so
i did that. Upon restart i got a message saying SYSTEM
NEEDS TO BE CHECKED FOR CONSISTENCY. The only file that
had a problem at that stage was MSHTML.DLL.
When The computer booted up fully I tried a few different
things. When I hit Internet Explorer it comes up and
then an error message comes up saying something like
PROBLEM, IE NEEDS TO CLOSE DOWN. This happens all the
time now. If I'm going through my hard drive looking for
something i get ERROR WINDOWS EXPLORE NEEDS TO CLOSE
DOWN. Which it does, the screen goes blank for a few
seconds and then anything i had open reappears.
Other things I get the same response for are Incredimail
and more worryingly SYSTEM RESTORE.
After all this I defragged my drive hoping that this
would work but I'm still getting the same problems. I
can still dial the internet. I can still view the
internet through Opera but not IE. I've got the latest
DAT update from MCAFEE and also have the latest stinger
stand alone virus checker. None of these are showing up
anything.
I ran REGEDIT to find out what updates I had downloaded
ie. HKEY LOCAL MACHINE-SOFTWARE-MICROSOFT-UPDATES-DATA
ACCESS and also WINDOWS XP -SP1or2. I found one thing in
SP1/2 which was the MICROSOFT ERROR REPORTING PATCH.
This had its own uninstall program so I got rid of it
hoping it would make a difference but it didn't.
The other thing that had been downloaded on the 20th Aug
was in the DATA ACCESS folder. Its called Q823718.
It's all very strange - I'd appreciate any advice you
could give me.
Thanks.

Shanna, if you have a WinXP CD I would try a Repair Install.
