I have a virus file which is in the system information
section in the "_restore" directory.
I have an ME machine and I can see this directory as o
the first on c: but on the XP machine I see nothing.
How do I get this to show please
TIA

The only way one can rid oneself of a virus in a restore point is to turn
system restore off, reboot, then turn it back on. It's not possible to
delete individual points - it's all or nothing.

In addition to the answer you've already received, the equivalent of
ME's _Restore folder is XP's hidden "System Volume Information" folder.
There will be one of these folders on each partition.

Sharon
the obviuos question then would be how do you view that folder as I
cannot on my XP machine
JOhn
that would be just out of interest because the suggestion Perdita
seems to have rid myself of the virus in question, however more
knowledge cannot be a bad thing (if used wisely)

Use Folder Options> View to show hidden and protected files and folders.
You may still need to adjust permissions as well to look inside the
folder. These details are just FYI. You've already addressed the
virus/worm situation using the recommended procedure passed on to you by
Perdita X. Dream. Am glad to hear that's taken care of.

I tried changing all that but to no avail, changed folders to view
hidden files etc, also protected files,
I will have to investigate permissions not sure about that one but
will hunt round for some clues
and as you rightly say it is just FMI so that I learn some more.
The problem has been solved but I have this insatiable thing about
wanting to know why and how, a real pain sometimes......
thanks

John, I underestand the curiosity factor! :)
First, you must be logged on with an account in the Administrator Group.
Then...
If you're using XP Pro, turn off Simple File Sharing in Folder View>
Options. Then right click on the folder to access the Security page of
its Properties. Add your account (or the administrator group) and select
the permissions you want to allow.
If using XP Home, you'll need to boot to Safe Mode to see the needed
Security page.
After setting the permissions, log off and then log back on. This step
is necessary as permissions are put in place during startup/logon.
