I have seen issues like this listed several times, but I have not seen many
suggested solutions. We recently installed two new computers that are
running XP on our network. We have an NT server and several Win 98
workstations. The XP machines replaced two 98 machines. Generally, the XP
machines are fine, with one exception --
When you open a file directory that has a large number of subdirectories or
files, the XP machines take much longer to display the list of
subdirectories or files. We are only talking about document files, here.
No multimedia or large graphic files (nothing more than 100k, and most
around 10-20k). The Win 98 machines would show the directory listing
within a second or two. The XP machines show the little flashlight icon
for 10-15 seconds, and then finally list the files.
How can we speed up the XP file display?
