Windows Explorer hangs

After upgrading to WIndows XP from Win 98 I have
encounted a problem with Windows Explorer. It hangs real
bad trying to get the other drive to show, which is D: I
have installed all of the WIndows updates and security
patches. You have to wait 5 minutes or langer sometimes
to get it to show contents of the D Drive. I was
thinking I might have to wipe out the master drive and
reload Win XP from scratch. Any ideas on a fix before I
do!
