video capture from analogue devices

I am having problems with capturing video in mpeg-2 format with the
NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 Display cum Capture card from live cable TV
programs or from VCR. I do not know whether it is the SP2 upgrade or
the frequent automatic updates XP keeps doing every day to the O S, but
I have now completely lost the functionality to capture video in mpeg-2
format with NeroVision Express 3. Even the video does not appear any
more in the NeroExpress window.
Just until two weeks ago, I was able to see the video, set the capture
settings, capture videos for a full movie skipping commercials and burn
the DVD with Nero 6. After the installation of SP2 and the automatic
updates. All that is gone.
Should I just Restore the system to the starting day of SP2, stop all
automatic updates to get back the video capture functionality?
Analogue capture devices are still in the market and so analogue
capture functionality is required with XP even if the future may be
only digital video. Also mpeg-2 format is still not defunct. So why is
analogue video not working with XP and Nero's latest software for
capturing and burning DVDs?

Alot of 3rd party software doesnt run with SP2,most software will have a
fix to run with SP2 by now,its been out for more than a year,if they dont,
then give em the deep six.....For what youre doing,all one needs is to
install
the drivers for the capture card,the software should be:WM encoder 9 series,
plus its utilitys,the WMCAP utility works great for pre-views,also,download
the
codecs....

Really? I'd dispute that 100%. All my XP PCs run SP2 and I don't have any
third party software that refuses to work.

Analog capture... OK... PowerDirector v4, 5 and 6 all work fine (Cyberlink),
WinDVD Creator v2 and v3 work fine, Roxio v7, v7.5 and v8 all work
fine......

Strangely enough even my ancient FX5700 with the current WDM nVidia drivers
will do just fine as the hardware device... though actually I prefer using
the Hauppauge PVR150 on the Windows x64 XP PC (with most of the above
software) as my desktop is usually far too busy with the digital side of
things.

I too disagree with that statement having 5 boxes all running SP2 with no
problems with ANY of my 3rd party apps.
As far as the ops issue I am guessing there's a codec conflict
someplacemaybe from the upgrade to SP2 and WMM2.1 and maybe not.
First thing I would do is reinstall Nero. After installing SP2 I did have a
few apps I needed to reinstall to get them to work properly but afterwards
everything worked perfectly.
If that doesn't do the trick THEN try doing a System Restore and see if it
works then manually do the updates to see what's being installed. Maybe it
is best to do them one at a time, reboot, and then try Nero to see if it
works.

I dispute Cari's disputation regarding analog capture working fine with
PowerDirector v4, 5 and 6. My experience is that the last version of
PowerDirector in which analog capture worked was v3. Unfortunately
installing v5 requires uninstalling v3 so now I have to use WMM to
capture then import the resulting .wmv file into PowerDirector v4 or v5.
I have recently posted this very problem on Cyberlink's PowerDirector
forum under the heading "No capture card support".

I would to add that Cyberlink Power Director 5 will not Capture from
VCR via USB Capture Device. But it capture via Firewire 1394. The
earlier version Power Director did capture from VCR via USB device.
Cyberlink supoorts confirms this.

I'm not using USB. As I indicated, on one PC I use a VIVO analog capture
card, on the x64 PC, I use a Hauppauge PVR150 attached to VCR.

If I'm capturing digital video, I use IEEE1394. I don't capture anything
via USB.

PD3 allowed me to analog capture either the Hauppage T/V card or the
NVidia GeForce PCX 5300 for S or composite video from a Hi8 camcorder
and later versions do not, that was my point and my gripe is the
inability of later versions to tolerate PD3 on the same drive. One would
expect USB to be slower but that was not my point.
