This is a relatively recent problem. The computer hangs
when I try going into standby mode through the Start
menu. There have been no major changes in the system. I
believe any number of device drivers can do this, but I
don't know where to start.

I have updated my display driver, an NVIDIA GeForce4 MX
440. I have also tried looking in Even Viewer, but no
problems have been reported. Is there any other way I can
investigate this?

XP Pro, P4 2.40 GHZ, 512 RAM.

I've now tried 3 different Nvidia drivers, same problem.
The computer will shut down normally, but always hangs
going into standby. Also, I've found that hanging on
standby kicks the router off line, causing the 2 other
computers to lose the Internet connection. A simple power
reset fixes the router, but it's an additional hassle. My
only option seems to be leaving the computer on and
powered 24 hours a day. It used to work fine in standby.

I've also tried going back to my former router, with no
change. Any additional tips would be appreciated.
