I have an idea for an application using instant messaging. But I
cannot find an SDK that will allow me to program new features for
Microsoft's instant messaging. Is there one out there?

Greetings,

Sort of. There's an old Windows Messenger API (with sketchy documentation), an unofficial
MSN Messenger API (which builds on the Windows Messenger one and is not "officially"
documented), a Windows Messenger Add-On framework (which longer is valid since Add-on support
was removed), the MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger Activities API and the Windows Live
Messenger managed add-ins support.
