This a two-parter...
1) Is there a 'show Desktop' function in XP or a keystroke that will hide
all apps and show the desktop? (I know the option exists somewhere!)
2) How do I get quick launch icons (those on the left of the start pop-up
menu) to stay static or set?
Thanks all in advance.

Hi,
1) Winkey+D
2) Right-click the taskbar, choose "lock the taskbar".
You can also create desktop shortcut icon. Just copy/paste the below lines
into notepad. Use file/"save as" and call it "show desktop.scf" and save to
the desktop. Drag and drop to the quicklaunch bar if you wish.
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=EXPLORER.EXE,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
