View Full Version : IRQ conflict

I've been using WinFax Pro for several months without any
problems - until today. I haven't been able to insert a
file - the WinFax Send window opens but all I can get to
appear is my standard cover sheet. I've spent hours on
the phone with both Dell and Symantec. Symantec support
tried everything they could think of and couldn't fix the
problem. They suspect that there is an IRQ conflict since
my modem is sharing IRQ 10 with several other devices.
They recommended getting Dell to switch the modem to a
unique IRQ to resolve the problem but Dell says it can't
be done. I'm not a techie and don't know who to believe -
I need WinFax for my work and just want to get it running
again. Any suggestions?? thanks

IRQ sharing is an integral part of all computers that use the PCI bus
(which is pretty much everything built in the last 8 years at least)
and Windows XP has increased the use of this. If IRQ sharing was the
cause of problems with WinFax there would be a large number of people
experiencing this specific difficulty.

I assume from your comments that the basic fax functions work okay. In
other words if you have a document open on your computer and you print
it, choosing WinFax as the printer, then that will work properly.

If any fax send function works properly then it is highly unlikely
that any hardware related issues are involved. It is almost certainly
software because insofar as the hardware is concerned "a fax is a fax
is a fax". The conversion of the included file into a fax format is a
software function.
