System slow down

Two days ago I noticed that every function of my computer
had become very, very sluggish. Some things won't even
open, such as disk cleanup. I receive a message window
telling me that I should use the other program to repair
the problem or retry. I do not have a clue what that
means. I have checked for viruses and have run the
Blaster worm fix tool. No viruses or worms were found. I
am also getting the Windows error message, on a regular
basis, that shuts down whatever activity I am involved
with.
My computer is less than a year old and I have had no
problems until now. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
for any help.
