System Information Volume

Hallo, I have a question:
On my computer (Xp Home Edition) is a folder: System
Volume Information. This directory has 2.8GB`s capacity!!!
I don`t know what is a directory, for what is on my
computer. Can I delete this directory??? What`s happen
when I delete him. I don`t know for what is this.
Please help me.
