I did a repair of windows xp, updated to sp1 but since
then have not been able to reinstall all the earlier
updates. I ask to scan the drive, and at "pick updates
to install" it sticks at 33%. It has done this for hours.

alex,

i also installed windows xp sp1a and it did not delete any of my updates

i do not believe that installing sp1a does anything to your updates

Hi Alex,

This problem can be resolved by enabling the option Use http 1.1 through
proxy connections in Internet Options settings.

Follow these instructions to enable the option:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. On the Advanced tab, clear the Use HTTP 1.1 check box.
4. Select the Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections check box.
5. Attempt to open the Windows Update site again.
6. If you are still experiencing this problem you can try selecting both the
HTTP 1.1 check box and the HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections check box.
This may resolve the issue.

This issue might also be caused by a registry problem with our Software or
Driver detection. If the resolution above does not work, please contact
Microsoft support at:

<end>

Hope this helps,
