Need Help w/CD ROM Drive Assignment***

I had my WinXP PC set up with my CD ROM as the "Q" drive and my old Zip
drive as the "G" drive. Had labels for each, "CD Rom" and "ZipDrive."

For some reason and I'm not sure when this happened, my CD-ROM wants to
be the "G" drive and bumps the Zip to "H"

I can use Disk Management to reset the CD to "Q" but at the next startup
it changes itself to the "G" drive and the Zip gets bumped again.

I've made the Zip drive the "Z" drive and the CD-ROM now stays at "G"
but I can't change the label. It shows the CD icon but hold onto the
"ZipDrive" label that I had when it was the Zip Drive.

Can someone help on this?

In that Windows XP assigns drive letters alphabetically, your ZIP drive
no matter what letter you assign it will come AFTER your CD-ROM drive.

To a point they are alphabetical but the each device's position on the
drive cables plays a part as well. This XP install show my ZIP drive as
'K:' and the CD burner as 'L:' I just left them the same as XP named
them when it was installed to 'J:' over 3 years ago. Just give
everything a label and drive letters are no longer all that important.

Windows Explorer as the ZipDrive (the name I gave to the Zip when it was
the "G" drive.

I know windows (and DOS) assign letters but I had the Zip drive as my
"G" drive and the CD-ROM as the "Q" drive for over three years now. I
don't have any idea of why things changed.

I had to go into the Registry and do a search on ZipDrive to find the
key that had the "label."

I changed it there and now it displays properly but I wish I could get
my Zip back to "G" and my CD-ROM to "Q" again.

They could change if you added or subtracted either a device or a
partition or changed cabling. If not then you have some corruption going on.

By the way my ZIP drive letter is listed before the CD drive letter
because the ZIP is secondary master and the CD is secondary slave. This
was just the easiest cabling when I built this comp. Modern motherboards
really don't care what device they boot from.

If its been 3 years you could have a failing device, cable or MB. Even
something as silly as a loose jumper on the back of the drive. Check
that all cables & jumpers are securely seated.

Hi again,

The CD-ROM is the Slave on the secondary with my DVD burner as the
primary on the secondary.

I have two HDD a primary and a slave each has a number of partitions
some hidden.

The Zip drive is the Zip 100 Plus - it is a dual option drive - it can
be used with the parallel printer port (which is how I use it - pass
thru for the printer) and the other option is SCSI which I don't use.

The connections are fine, it works well, I have some old graphics files
stored on zip discs but I really don't use it much at all. I use a USB2
thumb drive for file transfers and a few external HDD for moving/storing
larger files, such as image files, etc.
