View Full Version : Windows XP and HP LaserJet Printer

I have an old HP LaserJet 5L printer. I bought it new almost 10 years
ago. It still works well. I used it with Windows 95 and then Windows
98SE.

I just got a new PC with Windows XP.

While the HP printer still works well with my new PC and Windows XP, I
am now missing the printer status window that would show me the number
of pages to print and would allow me to pause or cancel the printing.
This window would automatically popup whenever I printed.

Also, if there is a paper jam or misfeed, I used to get a popup dialog.
This no longer happens.

Finally, when printing, an icon would appear in my tray that would allow
me to open the window that can also be reached by [Start > Settings >
Printers and Faxes] and opening a printer icon. This icon no longer
appears.

How can I enable these windows, popups, and icons? I still have the CD
with the HP software for Windows 95 (which worked very well on Windows
98), but I was advised not to try installing it with Windows XP.

These are features of the print driver, not the operating system.
Contact HP and ask for WinXP-specific drivers for the printer; the Win9x
drivers will not work with WinXP.

What you are describing is a utility written by HP for use with
this printer. Because this utility was written for Windows 9X, and
this includes Windows 98, it cannot be migrated for use with the
Windows NT kernel, which is used in Windows XP (as well as NT and
2000). AFAIK, HP did not update this utility for use with NT-based
systems. All HP did was update the drivers for NT, 2000 and XP. Be
happy that the Laserjet 5L is still usable and otherwise supported.

Your HP printer has built in drivers that came with XP, this built-in driver
may not have all the features earlier (Win98) drivers may of had.

If found the web page that Cari mentioned, if this does not solve your
problem one trick I used for inkjet printers for a newer member of the same
printer family was to download and install a driver that supports XP,
sometimes the newer driver (even though it was not for my specific printer).
The newer printer driver worked fine in most cases and sometimes not.

I went around and around starting at the URL you cite. I never could
find the drivers.
