View Full Version : low disk space, what was deleted?

I've received the popup message "low disk space warning
on drive C:, run disk cleanup"
I deleted the temporary internet files in Internet
Explorer and then my C: drive had about 110MB of space
left. After surfing the internet for a few minutes, I
checked available space on C: and it was back below 100MB.
When I tried to run the disk cleanup, it was checking the
drive and then it froze and I had to do a hard reboot.
After rebooting, I never manually deleted any more files,
but the "low disk space warning" popped up and soon the
C: drive space was back under 100MB.
Then, after a few more minutes on the internet, I noticed
that the "low disk space warning" did not pop up anymore,
and when I checked the C: drive, suddenly there was about
230MB of available space. Again, I hadn't willfully yet
deleted/compressed/moved any files manually (other than
the original Temp. Internet files which were only about
25MB), and I'm trying to find out what happened (what was
deleted?) to automatically free up over 100MB of space?
This makes me wonder, how long does it take Windows XP to
clear up space on a hard drive if you don't clear enough
manually, and is it even supposed to do so?
and also why the 'disk cleanup' freezes...
thanks, MD

You should do a Chkdsk to be sure some area of your hard drive is not
corrupted. Open My Computer, right click the C drive and choose properties,
then tools, check now, and click to fix errors and check free space.
