Might try a memory test http://www.memtest86.com/
A cold boot does a complete BIOS test, resetting a machine skips the
memory check (and it boots up).

I had kind of a similar problem. Whenever I started my computer, the clock
started at the same time, only the year was about 4 years past. I had to get
a new motherboard. A couple of its components had over-heated and failed.
Another problem I had was that my other hard drive was not found in MY
COMPUTER, put that may be for a different reason. You problem may be
hardware and not XP at all. Take it to a shop and have it looked at may be
the thing to do.
