Annoying bar/panel in Recycle Bin

Using WinXP Home. All updates etc in place.

I changed to Thumbnail view in My Pictures and applied the view to all
subfolders. Windows asked me if I wanted to turn something or other on and I
said Yes.

Now I've got this annoying bar or panel or something at the left side of the
screen in the Recycle Bin. There are two frames or boxes in it. The upper
one contains:

Other Places
Desktop
My Documents
My Computer
My Network Places

The lower one contains:

Details
Recycle Bin
System Folder

How do I make this go away?
