View Full Version : Can't Delete Downloaded Program

I downloaded a program and now want to delete it.

In Start/Control Panel/Add and Remove Software, the program does not appear.
It does appear in the Start/All Programs list.

I guess I can go into DOS and just delete the directory, but was wondering
why it doesn't appear so I can delete it using the preferred method.

Thanks.

Care to share with us which program you're talking about? It might help.

Find the directory it installed to (may take a bit
of detective work) and see if there's a README there.

Believe it or not, there are still a few well-written Windows
apps out there that do NOT need an uninstall utility because
they do NOT touch the Registry at all.

In that case, deleting the directory it resides in is OK, but
you need to make damn sure...

A program appears in the Add/Remove Programs list *only* if it comes with an
uninstaller *and* it puts a pointer to that uninstaller in the Add/Remove
Programs list.

Your program apparently didn't do at least one of those things.

The uninstall value will be listed via the registry under CLSID. In the
meantime, follow the steps provided here:

First check the folder where the program was installed and see if the
designers created a local uninstall option.
Sometimes they even put it on the All Programs | Application from Start
Menu. See if there is an Uninstall option from All Programs.

You could presumably do a System Restore - assuming that you only installed
it recently and there is nothing else that you might want that will be
affected.
