View Full Version : Need to Use XP ASR Program for 1st Time???

Needless to say, I thought my little foray into
Installing Creative's most recent drivers for my SB Live
5.1 would be easy; and that I would be the exception to
the countless horror stories I've heard. Well, I'M SUCH
AN IDIOT! So now the only way to 'uninstall my creative
drivers' is to get rid of them completely. So I have to
revert my system to the time before I installed them.
But wait, XP's System Restore never really works for me,
so this will be the 1st time I have EVER used the restore
portion of XP's native Backup program.

Every 4-8 weeks, or when I feel like my system is stable
and where I want it to be at, I do a full system back up
of JUST my Local Disk - C:\ drive AND the System State
files. The backup job is saved as XP ASR recovery file.
(The last file size was like 11 Gig or so.) I back up
this job to my second physical disk. For type of backup,
I selected Copy as the most recent one for 8-8-03; Verify
after Backup; Append to my media (which is just the hard
drive its coping to).

I have done this about 3 times so far since July when I
built my rig. What do I now do to restore my drive to
its backup of 8-8-03?
1. Do I Format/Wipe out my current C:\ drive first?
2. Do I just use the XP Install cd and do the backup from
there?

I hope I didn't screw up the initial backup portion, now
I just need someone to point me in the right direction
(links, MS KB Articles, etc..) on how to successful
restore my backup.

Thanks all.

I thought ASR did not work for Windows XP home version; it's for other
versions of Windows -- I think. Anyone out there please clarify this. What
is the best way for a guy or gal to fix corrupted files using the Recovery
Console? What is the best way to backup the system files needed, and what
is the best way to put them back in the computer if it had a major crash?
I'm talking about Windows XP home version. I don't really have help for
Courtney; I empathize.

Sincerely - Randyman
