Was reading about another OP who was having problems and one of the
advisers suggested installing the latest version of JRE, citing that
earlier versions were exploitable.
I recently reinstalled XP Pro with OEM restore disc set, so I checked
to see what version of JRE it installed. I could not find any
reference to Java on the Add/Remove Software screen, nor in the C:
Program Files folder, so I searched. I found a folder under C: Program
Files\IBM\ with Java2 RTE, Std Ed 1.4.1 and other Java apps in it.
So, my questions are,
Do I download and install Java 1.5.0.06 to this folder? Or a new C:
Program Files\Java folder?
After 1.5.0.06 is installed, do I uninstall the 1.4.1 version and all
associated apps?
If so, how, since there is no Java entry on the Add/Remove Software
screen?
I know this is XP, but maybe someone knows, should I also do the same
thing for my vanilla Win98 machine? No reference to Java on A/R
Software, nor in Proram Files, but do find it via search. No idea what
version.
