Friend's laptop with XP Pro - sub menus and options (ie rename folder) don't
stay available very long at all, even - START - Turn off computer - Turn off
or Restart, if one is not like 'greased lightning' the option buttons have
gone.
Have searched for an answer but not found it yet - would appreciate some
help

I have no idea what you are saying.
I can guess.

My suggestion is to plug in a USB mouse - stay away from the touchpad and
see if that helps.

Try opening the menus using the menu key at the bottom right of the
keyboard, if the key is there, between the Alt and Ctrl keys. If that works
ok, then you know the problem is with the mouse or touch screen buttons,
whichever you use.

Shenan,
Thank you for your reply & my apologies for not making my issue clear. I'll
try again.
On 'my' XP Home system, when I select START button the menu appears and will
sit there until I do something (select a program or click on desktop for
instance)
On friend's XP Pro laptop when I select START button the menu appears but
stays for less than 2 seconds, so one has to be very quick in selecting
anything.
Its the same with START - Turn off Computer - (then the "Turn off Computer"
window appears with the option of 'Standby - Turn off - Restart') but this
window only shows for less than 2 seconds, so one has to be very quick to
make selection.
He has a USB mouse attached and this issue manifests itself.
I have tried using the touchpad with the mouse disconnected and the issue is
still there.
I have used the menu key with the mouse disconnected that Alan suggested and
the issue is still there.

Although this issue isn't fatal (?) I would like to be able to fix it for
him (he is even slower than I am at selecting options)

Hope this is more clear
