This used to happen to me when I first got DSL. Turned
out to be an issue with the LAN connection finding a
dynamic IP address. This would randomly hang the
connection for a while. I fixed it by giving the LAN a
fixed IP. I don't know if you can or should do the same,
but maybe worth a try...
