View Full Version : WGA seems to disable any subsequent Updates

I've got a laptop that passed the genuine advantage web based validation. I
then went to do updates through the update site. The system pushed WGA to my
laptop and installed it successfully (since I got the congratulations
notice).

Subsequently, whenever I go to the update site, IE's display bar shows
little activity. I've let the thing sit for over 6 hours to no avail. The
end result is that I can not do any updates.

I've got other XP machines that can access the update site during the same
period that this one laptop is stalled.

Any ideas/suggestions on what is going on.

WGA should not have this effect, but any update, if it doesn't complete
installation correctly, might.

You could check out the windowsupdate.log file for clues:

start, run, notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log

but it can be long and not particularly interesting.

You might also want to troubleshoot WGA, just to verify whether it is
completely installed correctly:

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

If that checks out OK, you want WindowsUpdate troubleshooting:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

(you may find an error message in the log file which will help with that
troubleshooter.)
